Design Star

Okay, I’m a few days late but nonetheless – it’s time to chat about the final Design Star episode!  It was down to Kim and Todd – and you already know…KIM WON!

I was really glad.  I had been pulling for her all along.  I especially loved that she did not have formal interior design training – she was a hair stylist!  She did a great job maintaining her cool in tough situations (especially with Robb) but also knew when to draw the line when others were overly pushy.  I liked Kim’s overall designs much better than Todd’s primarily because they were more ”grown up” and sophisticated.  I look forward to watching her new HGTV show in the future.  The finale of Design Star only leaves me with one question – what “reality” show am I going to watch now?

I hope you have been following Design Star (HGTV) as I have!  It is down to the final two – Kim and Todd.  On this week’s episode, they were jetted off to Hawaii (how rough is that?) for a final challenge where they were given a dated hotel suite to “renew.”  Todd’s design was a little odd for me.  He placed the bed in the living room so “you can take advantage of the view when you wake up” – but it’s right next to the kitchenette.  Also, it’s all a little too blue for me… and little too “teen” or “college hangout.”  He painted bubbles on the walls and even though I liked the jellyfish cutout on the wall (minus the frame!), his suite just didn’t feel very sophisticated, or “adult.”  My kids would absolutely LOVE Todd’s suite.  I, on the otherhand, preferred Kim’s redo.  I liked her choice of colors, how she separated the kitchenette from the living room – and I LOVED the artwork behind the bed.

So, have you voted for your favorite Design Star?  (Voting ends Wednesday 9/12 at noon, Eastern time!) – go to

I just have to update my Design Star info this week!  Can you believe it?  Robb (a.k.a. (to me) the obnoxious, overly self-assured, “I can do anything,” “I have done everything,” guy / designer)…CRIED!!!!  Really?  He has real emotions? Of course, the whole time he is upset he is saying what fools the judges were and how they “missed out.”  Robb, you must be a nice guy under there somewhere because you were sad enough to cry, but really, was it ONLY because the judges made a big mistake?  Perhaps it was because you realized you have SOME shortcomings…Good Gosh!  You are human aren’t you?

Parting words:  Robb, I wish you the best…and at least you got to meet Wayne Newton…and Clive!

HGTV’s DESIGN STAR!

Last night’s 99-cent-store individual challenge was great – but having those poor store clerks count every last dollar bill ($399 for each designer) was a bit much!  Sure, the designer counted out the bills one-by-one as well, but you know someone had to double check the count before putting them in the cash register so they wouldn’t have to fork over the “missing” money at the end of their shift.

Here are a few thoughts I had as I watched:

·         Where does Sparkle Josh shop for his shirts?

·         Why weren’t Rob and Scott escorted out by security as they ran like children through the store, barreling their carts near innocent bystanders and into each other?  They could have killed someone!

·         How old are Rob and Scott?  How old do they act???

·         Todd, what exactly is couch surfing?

This week’s Best of Design Star:

Best shirt:  Todd (“Truckin’ in Texas” – it made me a bit homesick!)

Best quotes:

Vern:  “Dude.”  (…in response to Todd’s couch-surfing-inspired room design)

Clive:  “Is he losing his twinkle?” (…as he talked with the judges on the way to

commercial about, who else?  Sparkle Josh.)

Best design:  Even though Todd got the judge’s vote, my vote went to Will’s Zen room – very cool and calm.  (“Ohmm…”)

Honorable mentions:  Kim’s Tibetan rug, made of green lentils, and… in some strange way, Sparkle Josh’s room with the pink and gray tones.  (I must admit, I’m partial to some sparkle myself).

Not my fave:  Scott’s hodgepodge.  Poor Scott – he lost his focus.

So, in the end, Scott and Adriana’s shows were cancelled.  They seem like nice people so I hope they continue doing what they do.  Tune in next time for more thought-provoking opinions about Design Star!

It is a busy news day.  Here’s a sample of the headlines in the local paper today.

First, the bad news.

·         Acid-inhibiting drugs linked to dementia.  Okay.  I’ve used Tagamet, Zantac, and the rest of the medications in this category for years to address tummy troubles.  Now what?  Do I prepare to forget what I’m saying, what I’m doing, or where I’m going?  (Oh yeah, I’m already doing these things…).  The study used a limited population to reach these findings so I think I’ll wait for results of more thorough studies before I panic (…a cool head prevails).

·         An increase in alligators seen in local waters.  Great.  Just what I was hoping for – even more gators in Florida.  Maybe they will eat the lizards since there are so many of those – but do gators eat lizards since they are in basically in the same family?  I don’t know but I’d rather have lizards than gators in my yard.  The article indicated family dogs had come up missing near a particular canal and neighbors indicated they had seen alligators crossing the streets late at night, “probably in search of food.”  Heck, throw some steaks and burgers out there…gators gotta like beef.  I have to wonder though, would it be like a stray dog that when you feed it, it becomes “yours” and just hangs around?  Maybe beef isn’t the answer after all.  Animal conservationists say gators are misunderstood – we are moving in on their territory.  Do you think gators care if you are a Florida native or from Texas?  In the end, perhaps I won’t care if a gator comes my way due to my current bouts of early dementia…

Good news:  Forecaster reduces number of potential hurricanes and tropical storms for 2007 season.

·         I don’t want to jinx it so, enough said.  (However, the report had to add that residents should not let their guard down…one bad storm is enough to devastate the area.   – Thanks….you just had to burst my bubble, didn’t you?)
