Earlier today I had a few minutes to sit and watch this week’s episode of Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style. Nicole was this week’s “lucky” style disaster. I believe I have a lot in common with Nicole. She is a mom of two and she has lost her way in the world of style. Her typical wardrobe consisted of of t-shirts (various solid colors with a few patterns mixed in) and…(drum roll please….) capris. Well, say hello to… me! I think Nicole is 5′2″ and as a result of her short stature, capris are just not acceptable! (Apparently, they make you look shorter and dumpier — eww…that’s bad. However, it’s okay to wear capris if you are supermodel-ish…like Veronica, Tim’s lovely co-host / model). I’m 5′5,” so if I follow the same rule – out goes most of my closet. This has particularly been the case since our move to Florida (the heat, you know – and not working). So, what did Tim recommend in place of t-shirts and capris for everyday sort of “errands?” Here you go…

Now what you don’t see is that Nicole has on a short heeled shoe as well. Yes, she does look lovely, and if was on my way to a ladies’ lunch or a dinner night with the girlfriends, I might consider this dress. However, running to CVS to pick up shampoo? Not so much. Dashing to Publix for a gallon of milk? Probably not. Poor Nicole – they made her get rid of ALL of her t-shirts and capris and Tim said she should never wear capris again unless she was “digging a ditch…in the dark!” Those are some harsh words for capris, don’t you think? Seriously, what is she supposed to wear when she is cleaning the house or pulling weeds? I have personally worn capris in order to avoid wearing shorts! Another style guru recently said women over 30 should never wear shorts since “it just looks bad.” So, what are we women-over-30 who need to run pick up the kids from school and then dash over to pick up dry cleaning supposed to wear??? I guess I better start shopping for a stylish and flattering dress…(ugh).

I am 5′3 and live in the Missouri, I will never give up my capri’s. They are my in between jeans and short season. Tim Gunn doesn’t have 3 kids and I am sure he does not shop at CVS, so sorry Tim, not going with your opinion this time. How does he know anyway, does he wear them around the house? I look like a freak in those pants that are in between the capri’s and jeans. Love em.

I don’t think Tim Gunn has had the chance to observe much of the fashion trends in Missouri, do you?
I love capri pants too – just don’t tell Tim!

I have capris too and I wear them to the park, around the house, flying, etc. There are times when its just not appropriate to wear a skirt. And if you are like me and can’t find shorts that are flattering, capris are the way to go. So ladies, keep your capris.

Well, gals, if you care about style, then capris are a big NO. But if you care about comfort, more power to ya! I personally think that capris looks terribly sad on women of all ages except lean teens. They give off the “I’ve given up on myself” vibe!
I never watch Tim Gunn (no cable) but I’ve been wearing the skirt and tee-shirt option for serveral years now. I am the mother of 18 month old twins. I find that the quick trips about town are just as simple in a skirt (knee length and not too fitted) as they are in capris, more comfortable in fact!
